The view from the VirtualTasmania Arthurs Lake webcam captured the Arthurs Lake boat ramp covered in snow today, with Liawenee reaching a recorded -1.7 degrees C minimum temperature at 8am this morning..

As the day progressed, and the clouds cleared (somewhat), the snow started to melt and the Arthurs Lake webcam recorded the scene..

The Sydney maxi Wild Oats XI took round one in the battle of the maxis at the start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race today. From a good start, and with smart tactics, she was able to slow her British rival City Index Leopard on the short beat to windward to the first turning mark inside Sydney Heads and then extend that lead on the leg out to the second turning mark.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING

Thunderstorms are expected to develop about southeastern Tasmania this afternoon and evening. Some of these storms are likely to be severe.

Lightning, winds strong enough to bring down some tree branches and power lines, locally heavy rain and flash flooding, and hail large enough to damage cars are possible from now till about 9 pm.

The new Lagoon Track and camping facilities in the Southport Lagoon Conservation Area has opened, providing a sustainable experience for four wheel drive enthusiasts.

The new Lagoon Track requires a high clearance four wheel drive vehicle and it is not suitable for the cross-over, low clearance four-wheel drives.

The second lunar eclipse of the year was another total eclipse. Since the Moon was 2.6 days shy of perigee, it appeared 8% larger than it was during the March 2007 eclipse. The Moon's trajectory took it deep into the southern umbral shadow, resulting in a total eclipse that lasted 90 minutes.

POLICE URGE DRIVER CAUTION AS ICE GRIPS TASMANIA

UPDATE TO ROAD CONDITIONS:

A B-DOUBLE TRUCK HAS BE CAUGHT IN ICE ON THE GORDON RIVER RD AT MAYDENA. IT IS CURRENTLY BLOCKING THE ROAD AND THERE ARE REPORTS OF EXTREMELY ICEY CONDITIONS IN THE AREA. THE TASMAN HWY REMAINS CLOSED DUE TO THE TANKER JACK KNIFING AND IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN CLOSED FOR SOME HOURS. THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF REPORTS OF CRASHES ACROSS THE STATE SINCE MIDNIGHT.

ROADS REMAIN ICEY IN MANY AREAS AND MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO EITHER DELAY THEIR TRAVEL OR DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS.
